About Amesbury
Amesbury was settled in 1642, and became incorporated in 1668. Originally a Town, Amesbury officially became a City in 1996. Amesbury’s nickname is Carriagetown, due to its many mills that produced carriages in the 19th century. Numerous mills & factories were built along the Pow-Wow River and Merrimack River housing different kinds of trades, such as hats, textiles and hardware.
Today Amesbury’s mills are filled with businesses, restaurants and retail shops creating a bustling downtown atmosphere. Along point shore sits Lowell’s Boat shop, a historical landmark dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the art and craft of wooden boat building. In the more rural parts of Amesbury you’ll find Cider Hill Farm, truly a destination location mostly year round with apple picking, strawberry picking, farm animals, flowers and the famous cider doughnuts!
