Maintain your winter warmth. Annual oil boiler maintenance calls for your system to be serviced in the summer, ensuring if any problems are found, you can repair or replace your system to stay toasty warm in the winter months. So what if you didn’t have your boiler checked out, how do you know if your system might be failing? Having just replaced our boiler and hot water heater in October, we did experience some telltale signs that our 22-year-old forced hot water system was starting to call it quits.
- Strange Noises: Unusually loud clanking, banging, and whistling. Vibrations even felt in the room above the boiler as the system fires up.
- Technician Visits: Strange noises = more calls to the technicians. Minor repairs here and there. More visits = more money spent.
- Heating Bills: Older systems simply don’t heat as well = turning up the thermostat. More fuel burned = more money spent.
Hoping all would go well on our system’s latest check-up, we were delivered the news that the boiler was failing. Slow leaks were rusting out the boiler; it was doomed and projected to not make it through the upcoming winter. The first thing we did correctly in the situation was that it was not already winter! The second thing we did (living in Massachusetts) was to call Mass Save for an energy audit. https://www.masssave.com. Mass Save was booked out for a couple of months, still giving us enough time for the new boiler and hot water heater to be installed before winter (and become eligible for great rebates!).
With the shiny new system in place, we have noticed the benefits already. Hopefully these tips have been beneficial for you to detect the signals with your own systems, and you maintain winter warmth!
