October 8, 2026
There are two businesses at 25 Broadway, and this fall their signs say opposite things. SurfSide's menu page reads "Closed for the season, see you next year!" At the same address, Groundswell Surf Cafe lists itself as open year round, daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That one address sums up Salisbury Beach in October. The beach center doesn't go dark. Part of it closes, a smaller part keeps running, and the town and its nonprofits keep scheduling events that bring people back to Broadway through early December. Some of the money raised at those fall events pays for the next summer.
The year-round businesses are packed into a few addresses near the beach center. The seasonal ones are close by. Here's how the posted schedules compared as of late September 2026:
| Spot | Address | Posted fall status |
|---|---|---|
| Groundswell Surf Cafe | 25 Broadway | Year round, daily 8 a.m.–2 p.m. |
| Joe's Playland, arcade and ice cream stand | 15 Broadway | Year round; Fridays from 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. |
| Salisbury House of Pizza | 2 Beach Road | Open all year, daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m. |
| Tripoli Pizza & Bakery | 23 Broadway | Hours posted; may vary with weather |
| Taste Buds Seaside | 8 Broadway | Tuesday through Sunday hours posted; no winter schedule listed |
| Joe's Playland, second location | 12 Broadway | Closed until spring |
| Lee's Seafood at Joe's Playland | 5 Ocean Front North | Closed for the season |
| SurfSide | 25 Broadway | Closed for the season |
The table shows a split. Joe's Playland keeps its main arcade and ice cream stand at 15 Broadway open all year. For fall, winter and spring, the plan is weekends plus Massachusetts and New Hampshire school vacation weeks. The second location at 12 Broadway runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and is already marked "See you in the Spring!" So the same business is open and closed at once, depending on which side of the street you're on.
Groundswell's off-season menu is a bit different from summer. The cafe opened in 2015 and lists bowls, breakfast burritos, vegan meals and seasonal salads, but tacos are summer only. It also has a beachside order and pickup window, and its site notes it's just steps from the carousel, the boardwalk and the beach center picnic area. In October that pickup window may matter more than the limited indoor seating.
A few places on the stretch have posted hours but not a winter plan. Taste Buds Seaside at 8 Broadway lists a Tuesday-through-Sunday schedule and is closed Mondays, but says nothing about a winter schedule. Gracie's Bar & Grill at 5 Broadway calls itself seasonal. Its hours page was last updated in May 2026 and asks guests to call for current hours. Seaglass Restaurant & Lounge at 4 Oceanfront North has a dated fall event, covered below, but its homepage doesn't post regular operating hours.
Two of the beach's fall schedules turn over on the same day. The parking-fee period at Salisbury Beach State Reservation runs from May 23 through October 12. During that window, day parking costs $14 for Massachusetts plates and $40 for out-of-state plates, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.
October 12, 2026 is a Monday, and Joe's Playland lists a special opening at 10 a.m. that day on top of its regular Friday-through-Sunday fall hours. That makes it both the last day of the state's fee season and a weekday when the main arcade is open.
The camping schedule shifts ten days later. DCR's 2026 camping schedule keeps the Salisbury Beach campground open through November 28. From October 22 on, it runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights only.
The campground switches to its three-night schedule on October 22, and that same evening the town holds its Trunk or Treat. The Salisbury library lists it for Thursday, October 22, starting at 5 p.m., on Broadway at Salisbury Beach Center.
The rest of October's town calendar takes place away from the sand. The library's scarecrow display and contest runs October 1 through 31 on the Salisbury Town Common, along Route 1 and the Town Square. Families, groups, businesses and nonprofits can all enter. Halloween-night trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods is October 31, typically from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Earlier in the month, Salisbury Parks & Recreation lists the Salisbury Art Stroll at Pettengill Farm, 45 Ferry Road, on October 10 and 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The art portion is free and runs alongside the Fairy Gnome Discovery Walk.
Trunk or Treat is the event on that list that puts a weeknight crowd back on Broadway. Groundswell closes at 2 p.m. Salisbury House of Pizza stays open until 10 p.m. every day, two blocks away at 2 Beach Road.
The beach's adult fall events are tied to next summer.
Blue Ocean Music Hall's current calendar lists the Rockin' Halloween Costume Ball with WildFire Band for Saturday, October 31 at 8 p.m. It's a 21+ event, and ticket proceeds support the Salisbury Beach Partnership's 2027 summer concerts and fireworks. One caution: the venue's separate event page still shows last year's October 25 date and a 2025 ticket link. Use the main calendar and confirm tickets before you buy.
Before that, Seaglass Restaurant & Lounge hosts Pasta & Potions on Wednesday, October 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. It's one of the few dated fall events posted by an oceanfront restaurant.
Then the beach center's biggest off-season event begins. The 14th annual SeaFestival of Trees runs as follows:
Admission is listed at $10 for adults and $5 for children five and under, and indoor faux-ice skating is included. Handcrafted holiday wreaths by local artisans go on display at the Salisbury Beach Historic Carousel during the festival, with raffle tickets on sale. Event parking costs a fee in the Carefree Parking lot next to Blue Ocean Event Center, and street parking is free. The festival's pages show older publishing dates even though the schedule is for 2026, so check the official schedule again as the festival gets closer.
From the Halloween ball through the festival's last day, Broadway has a scheduled reason to draw people roughly once a month until early December. Groundswell and the 15 Broadway arcade stay open the whole way through.
As the beach scales back, the year's notable Salisbury opening is inland. Smoke on the Water is at 34 Bridge Road. It comes from the team behind Peabody's Big Pig Barbecue Catering. Founder and owner Chris LaBella and co-founder and pitmaster Chris Newberry opened it after a 13-month renovation of the property. Northshore Magazine reported in July 2026 that the smokehouse runs four Texas-built smokers, two MM2000 pits with rotating racks and two 1,000-gallon Bison offsets, all burning only post oak shipped up from Texas. Newberry told the magazine that briskets and pork butts usually take 10 to 13 hours, cooked at 225 degrees and never above 250.
When Boston 25 previewed the opening in April, the plan was seven days a week. The restaurant's own site now says Tuesday through Sunday, without daily hours. It takes scheduled pickup orders through Toast, and its dine-in menu includes brisket, beef and pork ribs, pork belly, turkey, sausage, scratch sides and a full bar. The magazine singled out the Dino Beef Rib, an oversized rib meant for sharing.
A few other places away from the beach have posted fall hours. Nancy's Marshview Cafe at 155 Bridge Road lists 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. Lena's Seafood at 131 Rabbit Road lists fall hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Capri Seaside Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria at 3 Central Avenue serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Nick's Place at 111 Lafayette Road posts daily hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
One habit is worth keeping. Joe's Playland tells visitors to call ahead or check Facebook for weather-related closings, and Tripoli asks the same. The year-round places stay open all year, but a nor'easter can still change the hours on a given day.
